The Pittston City Streets and Sanitation Department was established by ordinance on August 21, 1896. Today, the Streets and Sanitation Department is a full-time professional municipal public works department.
The Pittston City Department of Public Works provides the following services:
Recycling and Refuse Collection for Over 3,500 Households
- Weekly residential curbside collection of refuse (garbage) & recycling;
- Bi-Weekly residential curbside collection of yard waste recycling 9 months of the year and annual curbside Christmas tree collection;
- Drop-off glass recycling at the public works building, 2 Tunnel Street;
- Bi-Weekly Saturday drop-off for glass and yard waste recycling at the public works building, 2 Tunnel Street;
- An annual electronics recycling drop-off day

Maintenance of 21.91 Miles of City-owned Streets and Alleys:
- Pothole patching & crack sealing;
- Crosswalk Painting;
- Installation and maintenance of traffic signage, parking signage and street name signs;
- Management of contractual repaving projects
- Winter snow plowing & Ice abatement
- Street Sweeping & Litter Abatement;
- Maintenance of street lights, traffic signals and pedestrian crosswalk signals;
- Maintenance of the city’s GIS software for the tracking of street and sign maintenance and conditions;
- Coordination with PENNDOT on the 6.98 Miles of state-owned roadways in the city (North & South Main Street; William Street; Parsonage Street; Laurel Street; East Columbus Avenue; Mill Street; Plank Street & the Kridlo Memorial (Ft Jenkins) Bridge)
Operational Management of 135,000 linear feet of Sewer Mains Serving Over 6,000 Customers:
- Monitoring and cleaning as needed 557 manholes and 683 street drains;
- Coordination of the clearing of any sewer main blockages;
- Oversight of contracted sewer system repairs;
- Supporting monitoring and reporting for compliance with the MS4 stormwater permit issued by the Federal Environmental Protection Agency
Public Property Management
- Exterior Maintenance of City Hall, 35 Broad Street;
- Maintenance of all Public Parks, Playground and Monuments;

- Maintenance of over 100 city-owned parcels of land and property including vacant lots, utility rights of ways and parcels awaiting economic redevelopment;
- Assisting the Property Maintenance Code Enforcement Officer with securing vacant and or condemned structures
