Community Development

The City of Pittston Office of Community Development is responsible for providing programs and resources designed to create sustainable economic and social benefits for residents, businesses, and visitors. The Office of Community Development is responsible for making applications for and administering funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program. Utilizing these funds, the office makes investments that benefit low-and-moderate income persons, address community development needs to improve the health and welfare of the community and focus on eliminating blight throughout the community.

Fair Housing

Fair housing refers to free and equal access to residential housing – i.e. housing choice. According to the federal Fair Housing Act, it is illegal to discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, or familial status in the sale, rental, and/or financing of dwellings. Additionally, Pennsylvania’s Human Relations Act prohibits discrimination on the basis of age (over 40), ancestry, and the use of a support animal.

Redevelopment

The Pittston Redevelopment Authority focuses on projects to revitalize commercial and residential properties to spur investment in the city, create jobs, and attract and retain residents. Projects are financed by City appropriations, federal and state grants and public-private partnerships. The Redevelopment Authority is established pursuant to Section 18-1 of the Pittston City Code and is governed by a 5-member board appointed by the City Council, with support for daily operations provided by an Executive Director and professional staff.
